What Is IV Therapy?

Intravenous—or IV—therapy delivers fluids through a small catheter placed into a vein. Because the infusion enters the bloodstream directly, it bypasses the digestive system and allows immediate access to the fluids and nutrients included in the treatment.

An IV formulation may contain hydration fluids, vitamins, minerals or other ingredients selected by the treating healthcare professional. The appropriate ingredients, amounts and infusion rate depend on your health, medications and reason for seeking treatment.

Hydration Support

IV therapy delivers fluid directly into the bloodstream. It may be helpful for appropriate patients who need additional hydration support or have difficulty maintaining adequate fluid intake.

When medically appropriate, an infusion may include selected vitamins or minerals. Direct administration bypasses the digestive system, although the need for these nutrients should still be evaluated carefully.

Personalized, Clinically Supervised Care

IV therapy can be adjusted according to your medical history and wellness goals. Alicia evaluates your needs, selects an appropriate formulation and monitors your response throughout treatment.

IV therapy is not intended to cure disease, guarantee increased energy, prevent illness or replace balanced nutrition, routine hydration, prescribed medication or care from your primary healthcare provider.

What to Expect

Before treatment, Alicia will review your medical history, current medications, supplements and allergies. Medical clearance or additional information may be required depending on your health and the planned infusion.

If you are an appropriate candidate, a small IV catheter will be placed into a vein, typically in the arm. The infusion will then be administered at a controlled rate while you relax in a comfortable setting.

Tell Alicia immediately if you experience burning, swelling, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath or another unexpected symptom. The infusion can be slowed, paused or discontinued when necessary.

Contraindications: Who May Not Be a Candidate?

IV therapy is not appropriate for everyone. Certain health conditions may require medical clearance, laboratory testing, changes to the formulation or avoidance of elective IV treatment.

You may not be eligible—or may need approval from your physician—if you:

  • Have kidney disease or reduced kidney function

  • Have congestive heart failure, significant cardiovascular disease or a condition requiring fluid restriction

  • Have significant liver disease

  • Have previously experienced a serious reaction to an IV infusion

  • Have been instructed to restrict fluids, sodium, potassium, vitamins or minerals

Always provide a complete and accurate list of your health conditions, allergies, medications and supplements before treatment.

Risks and Possible Side Effects

IV therapy is an invasive procedure and is not risk-free. Potential side effects and complications include but not limited to:

  • Temporary discomfort during IV placement

  • Bruising, bleeding or soreness

  • Swelling or irritation around the IV site

  • Infection

  • Allergic reactions

  • Fluid overload in patients with certain prexisting conditions such as heart or kidney disfunction.

  • Rare but potentially serious IV-related complications

Alicia will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and relevant risks before treatment.

IV therapy at Monroe Wellness is an elective wellness service and is not a substitute for emergency care, medical diagnosis or treatment from your primary healthcare provider.
